Nasarawa United showcased their fighting spirit in a crucial NPFL match day 29 on Sunday, securing a dramatic 1-1 draw against former Premier League champions, Kano Pillars, at the Sani Abacha Stadium. The match marked a pivotal moment in United's campaign to stave off relegation, and young midfield sensation Emmanuel Utake proved to be the heartbeat of the team's performance, earning him the SWAN Kano Man of the Match award.
The encounter was fiercely competitive, with both teams exhibiting solid athleticism and tactical acumen. Kano Pillars struck first in the 18th minute when their young midfielder Umar Sani threaded a superb pass into the box for Auwalu Malam, who coolly slotted the ball past Nasarawa goalkeeper Detan Ogundare to give the hosts an early lead.
Undeterred by the setback, Nasarawa United pushed forward in search of an equalizer, and their efforts bore fruit in the 68th minute. Idris Ajiya soared above the defense to meet a precise cross from substitute Benjamin Jack, powering home a header that drew the visitors level and reignited their survival hopes.
Despite coming close to securing a valuable win, a last-minute miss from Jack prevented United from taking all three points, resulting in a shared outcome that leaves them in 17th place on the NPFL ladder with 33 points, while Kano Pillars remains comfortably positioned 7th with 43 points.
In post match, a beaming Utake expressed his gratitude to the members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Kano State Chapter for acknowledging his contributions. "It’s an honor to receive this award, especially playing against football legends like Rabiu Ali and Ahmed Musa," he said. Utake also praised the unwavering support from Kano Pillars fans, showcasing the camaraderie that exists within Nigerian football.
While Kano Pillars will visit Plateau United on Match Day 30 in their bid to improve their position in the NPFL and secure a continental ticket, Nasarawa United prepares to host reigning league champions Rangers International FC of Enugu at Lafia City this weekend, the team is determined to build on this momentum and secure critical points in their fight against relegation.
