The 3rd edition of the Dr. Ibrahim Galadima Cup is set to kick off on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, promising an unprecedented football experience. For the third consecutive year, the competition will feature FIFA-approved technology, including the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system. This year, organizers have taken it up a notch by introducing live streaming and real-time match statistics, offering fans an immersive experience like never before.
The prestigious tournament celebrates the enduring legacy of Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Galadima, a renowned figure in Nigerian sports and patron of the Nigeria Olympic Committee. The event serves as a tribute to his exceptional contributions to sports development in Kano and across the nation.
Engr. Suleiman Musa, Head of the Local Organizing Committee, expressed pride in the tournament's role in pioneering technology in Nigerian football. "We began integrating VAR three years ago, and now we're proud to be part of Nigeria's progress toward embracing modern football technology," he noted.
The tournament also offers a significant learning opportunity for match officials, with Referee Coordinator and NRA 2nd Vice President Ibrahim Umar Fage highlighting the benefits of using advanced systems. "This technology allows our referees to enhance their skills in ways they might not have the chance to elsewhere," he said.
This year's edition features 16 teams, including Damburan and Funtua FC from Katsina, a team from Zamfara state, and 13 teams from Kano. With its innovative technology and commitment to developing Nigerian football, the 2025 Dr. Ibrahim Galadima Cup is poised to be a milestone event in the country's sports calendar.
