The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has announced plans to introduce a minimum monthly wage of 1 million naira (approximately $650 USD) for all players in the top flight league. This move is aimed at improving the standard of living for players and ensuring that they are adequately compensated for their services.
According to sources close to the league, the decision was reached after a meeting between the NPFL management and club owners. The new wage structure is expected to take effect from the start of the 2024/25 season.
"This is a significant step forward for Nigerian football," said NPFL Chairman, Honourable Gbenga Elegbeleye said in an interview on Eagle7fm sports radio. "We want to ensure that our players are well taken care of and that they can focus on their careers without worrying about their financial well-being."
The move is seen as a positive development for the league, which has struggled with issues of low player wages and poor working conditions in the past. The new minimum wage is expected to attract top talent to the league and improve the overall quality of play.
Players and coaches have welcomed the news, with many expressing their excitement about the prospect of earning a higher income. "This is a game-changer for us," said one player who wished to remain anonymous. "We can finally focus on our careers without worrying about how we will make ends meet."
The NPFL has also announced plans to introduce other reforms aimed at improving the league, including increased funding for clubs and improved infrastructure. With these developments, the league is poised for a major turnaround and is expected to become one of the top leagues in Africa.
